Me against the Cactus

So, I'm walking to the back porch of mom and Dan's in the dark and suddenly I feel a sharp pain and hear a crunch...

One of these had broken off from the front yard and Dan had taken it to the back to try and grow a new plant. I stepped on it!!! OMG did it hurt!!! A week later, I am getting these hard like blister things on my toes. The nurse at work told me it's probably the spines that I couldn't get out, working their way out.. Never battle a cactus! It will win everytime! OUCH!!

Today's name tattoo = Tomorrow's cover-up job

so you've been dating your new boyfriend or girlfriend for a few months, and things are going really good! it's so perfect and magical. and you just get this 'feeling' that they're "The One". plus they're smart, and funny, and so hot. wow, this feels like love!

your next step? make your devotion permanent, and have their name tattooed on your skin. or even cooler, get a similar tattoo inked on both of you. it'll be a way to prove your undying love for each other!

actually, wait. that's a stupid, stupid, stupid idea.
do you know any couples that have each other's names tattooed somewhere on their bodies that are still together?

probably not.

i'm usually inclined to be superstitious, and there does seem to be a connection with name tattoos and following break-ups. i feel that getting a loved one's name tattooed on you would just be tempting the gods of mayhem.

it's like signing a death warrant for your relationship. i'm not sure why. maybe it's the constant reminder of the permanence of your situation, or maybe it's because tattoos do something weird to your brain that makes you freak out about commitment. but one way or another, if you get inked, you're breaking up.

just look at the myriad of hollywood celebrities who have had their partner's names inked on their skin, if you do not know anyone personally who have gone under the tattoo gun and then see their relationships doomed for failure.
angelina jolie and billy bob thornton.
halle berry and her first husband david justice.
johnny depp and winona ryder.
pamela anderson and tommy lee.
tom arnold and his ex-wife roseanne.
paris hilton and nick carter.
oh, i could go on and on....

granted, the beckhams are one of the few that have been inked and still together. but who's to know how long that'll last? they almost went into splitsville after his infidelity, but, heh, that's a different story.

johnny depp's "winona forever" arm tattoo has been edited to read "wino forever." pamela anderson's "tommy" finger tattoo was redone to read "mommy" after they had split. angelina jolie has had the "billy bob" above her dragon tattoo lasered off. the fact of the matter is, majority of couples who swore their love would never die are now scrambling to the nearest cover-up artist to erase forever the one they claimed undying love for.

getting a tattoo of that special someone's name is a generous show of devotion, and if you decide that this is really what you want to do, i will advise you to think before you decide to have it permanently etched. if you're still bent on it, a good advice would be to build personal meaning into a design without limiting the life span of the image.

julia roberts fared much better with the ink she had done during her kiefer sutherland days. she had a small heart with the japanese kanji for 'strength' inked on her shoulder blade. even after breaking up with the actor, the tattoo still in a way bears some form of meaning without being associated to her ex-love.

i say, if you do want to get someone's name tattooed on your skin, save it for your children, parents, or family members - you will always love them, no matter what. buy your sweetheart a teddy bear, a ring, or an alphabet pendant, no matter how sure you are that you'll always be together.

and if you think of getting inked with the attitude that "if it doesn't work out, i can always get it removed or covered up", you should not even be thinking about it in the first place. getting a tattoo removed is more painful and time-consuming that getting inked, trust me. and the scar is uglier than the memory the tattoo serves to remind.

so, how much do you love that partner of yours again?

names tattooed upon your body won't make you or the other person any more committed to each other. and it is not like a shirt that you can take off.

think. the 'curse' may just be a load of crap, but there's always the "what if".
could you live with it?
